One Heart

One day a bird flew low

to see herself reflected in the water.

A fish, taken by her beauty, leapt in the air.

“Marry me,” he said, “and we’ll be forever happy.”

She replied: “But you cannot live in the sky,

and I cannot live in the water,

and though I admire you very much,

I’m afraid I must say no.”

The handsom fish leapt once more

and spoke these words that are true:

“At night when the lake is still

and the moon shines over the hill,

the surface becomes a mirror;

in its reflection, our worlds draw near.

Promise that you’ll meet me there.

Promise you’ll not forget.

If your love is as true as mine,

nothing will keep us apart;

we can live in both worlds with only one heart.”
